Stateless

1920: The Schunck family in Heerlen becomes stateless, but they don’t notice it.
After the end of World War I, the losers had to pay. The Treaty of Versailles placed the region of Eupen and Malmedy from 1920 to 1925 under Belgian military administration, in the form of the Gouvernement Eupen-Malmedy. During this period, the region was subject to a plebiscite. Not to determine whether the region would be permanently separated from Germany and annexed to Belgium, as originally planned. The population could just choose their own nationality. So the vote was not secret, since the ballots required the name and postal address of each voter. Fearing expulsion if they voted for Germany, the populations of Eupen and Malmedy voted to join Belgium.
The region was important to Belgium because of its water and its vast forests (coal mines in the Borinage). It was of no importance, that the the overwhelming majority of the population speaks German.
The Schunck family in Heerlen did not participate in this plebiscite of 1920. Arnold died 1905. His son Peter, grown up in Heerlen, was not interested in belgian political items. So why participate? In consequence they lost the prussian nationality, but they obtained neither the belgian nor the dutch nationality. They never asked for it. So they continued their lives, on the assumption to have the Prussian nationality, up to the thirties, when Pierre Schunck married and he had to procure papers. .
