Douwe Verhagen

 08-10-1917 Assen      04-01-1943 Neuengamme (25)
- Initial resistance - Groep Dresen - Maastricht -

Maastrichtse Gevelstenen

Douwe Verhagen was a professional sergeant in May 1940 at the enclosure dam. There the Dutch defenders withstanded to the invading troops of Nazi Germany until the capitulation of the Dutch army as a whole. [1]
After the capitulation and being prisoner of war, like many colleagues, he became a customs officer, starting in summer 1940 at the Caberg-Smeermaas border office. [1]
That was the border office between Caberg (Maastricht) and Smeermaas (Belgium). There he was tijdelijk hulpcommies (temporal assistant official) of import duties and excise. In that border office a strong anti-German mood prevailed. [2, p.96]
They joined the resistance group Dresen [3], which also called itself RAF group out of sympathy for the British airmen they smuggled across the border. [2, p.97]
Other resistance groups also called them and resistance workers at the Maastricht tax office the tax group, but they did not appreciate that for security reasons. The group was rounded up by treachery between November 28 and mid-December 1941. Douwe was arrested on December 2, 1941. [2, p.117]
Colleagues Egbert Wolf and Douwe Verhagen lived with the Stols-Franssen family at Schildersplein 13 in Maastricht after taking up their posts. [1]
Stolpersteine are laid there for both of them. [5]
In the tax office of Maastricht is a relief of sandstone in honor of the five tax officials who fell in the resistance, including Douwe Verhagen. [4]
He is listed in the “Erelijst 1940-1945” (Honor Roll of the Dutch Parliament). [6]
