Johannes Mathias Schreurs (Mathieu)

 07-12-1919 Stein      05-05-1945 Neuengamme (25)
- People in hiding - Forced Labor - Sittard -

The widow of the factory worker Mathieu Schreurs filled in an OGS form after the war (file in the archives of the Oorlogsgravenstichting in the National Archives [1]) in which she stated that he had been sent to Germany by the NSB (Dutch Nazi Party) rather than by an employment agency as was usual. From this we can conclude that he had gone into hiding to avoid having to work in Germany and was betrayed by a member of the NSB. She further wrote that he was taken to Neuengamme via Amersfoort in 1943 and that he died on a transport between Neuengamme and Bergen-Belsen on April 26, 1945. [1]
On the website of vriendenkringneuengamme.nl we find different information: arrested on June 15th 1944, reason for arrest: withdrawal from forced labor in Germany. Arrived on 10-09-1944 from Amersfoort. The date and place of death are given as May 5, 1945 in Neuengamme. [2]
The widow’s information, which the Oorlogsgravenstichting received via the municipality of Sittard, appears to be more reliable until his arrest. It is difficult to say anything definite about the date and place of his death. It was the last phase of the war, the time of the death marches. [3]
Did Mathieu Schreurs die on one of these marches or before that in Neuengamme?
