Oorlogsgravenstichting

The day of Lei van Geloven’s death is described in detail on the dutch websites of tracesofwar.nl and wo2slachtoffers.nl. [1]
The municipality of Kessel wrote to the OGS about this after the war with fewer details:
During the German roundup on October 8, 1944, the person in question went into hiding to avoid deportation to Germany. During the transfer of a number of people in hiding, the person in question was seen and chased by the Germans. During this chase, he was shot by the Germans near Helden’s farm.
The person in question was Dutch and also behaved like a Dutchman during the occupation
    . [2#3]
On the next page it says illegal laborer and also in hiding. [2#4]
On the subject of the church raid on October 8, 1944, see Between Maas river and Peel, The big round-ups.
The term "illegal worker" was used to describe resistance fighters. Unfortunately, nowhere is it mentioned what his resistance work consisted of, which is why he is classified here as part of the unorganized resistance. Also according to both the Oorlogsgravenstichting [5] (Dutch War Graves Foundation) and the Erelijst van Gevallenen [3] (Honor Roll of the Fallen), he was a member of the resistance. He was a farmhand for farmer Mathieu Heldens on the Cuppenhof farm in Kessel-Hout. On Sunday, October 8, 1944, the Great Church Raid took place. Therefore, Van Geloven and some other men were still hiding in the woods behind the farm the following day. Around six o’clock in the evening, Lei came to the farm to eat something, but was seen by passing men of the SiPo-Maastricht. They chased him and shot him. [1]
He is buried in the Roman Catholic parish cemetery in Kessel, row 11 grave nr.2. [2#12].
For unknown reasons, the OGS says that he is buried in row 36, grave number 15. [5]
His name is on the war memorial in Kessel. [4]
