Bekanntmachung – Bekendmaking

There are many who will always remain anonymous. Example: There was also a substantial number of miners in Valkenburg, who worked in the near-by coal mining district around Heerlen. Who of them participated in the mine strike in April-May 1943? Who has actively done sabotage there? We want to remember to all those people by posting this announcement by the Higher SS and Police Führer of the provinces of Limburg and North-Brabant on the death sentences in connection with this strike.

Harrington is buried in Henri Chapelle, the three others have been brought back home to the States.”

† 1987-11-26
Heerlen
K.P. - survivor - Jacobus Reinier Peter Crasborn, from Ittervoort, decided after four years of high school to study for mine surveyor. On January 1, 1940, he was employed in this profession at the Oranje Nassau IV mine. His school friend L.J. de Graaf, head of the administration of the same mine, involved Crasborn in the distribution of the resistance paper “Het Vrije Volk”. As head of the KP groups in Südlimburg, he led the attack on the local distribution office in cooperation with LO-Valkenburg. In the second half of July 1944, Crasborn and Van Kooten moved to Swalmen at the invitation of J. Frantzen. They found shelter on the monumental De Baxhof farm of the Poels family on the outskirts of the village.
During Operation Market Garden, he asked the KP groups to procure weapons, which led to the adventure in the forests of Baarlo. Crasborn was the commander of this campaign, but was usually not on site.
Photo: Major Jacques Crasborn, from December 2 on, 1944 second commander of the BS (Inland Armed Forces) south of the great rivers, in an armchair by the fireplace, on his first visit to the Command of Limburg at the Hotel Oranjehof in Valkenburg.
After the war, Crasborn became chairman of the Limburg section of the National Federation of Former Resistance in the Netherlands (NFR / VVN) and Stichting 40-45 (foundation to commemorate the fallen of the resistance in Limburg 1940-1945).

occasional resistance - Valkenburg - survivor - Leo Dahmen is one of many examples of spontaneous resistance without which organized resistance would have been impossible. It is unknown whether he did more. Pierre Schunck, who at the time did not offer organized resistance himself, wrote about him: “Fortunately the gardener, Leo Dahmen, digged in the weapons deeper in another place before and built a potato heap upon them, like they were usual for the winter storage.” To read more, click on the link below.

occasional resistance - Valkenburg - survivor - Farmer at the Koningswinkelhof, a traditional mixed farm. Neighbor of Pierre Schunck. Immediately joined in when he was asked by him to help in October 1942. They went with his horse and carriage to save valuable things from the Jesuit monastery that was seized by the SS. This was not yet an act of organized resistance, but it was a precursor, for Pierre Schunck too. We do not know whether the Donners family also hided searched people (the so called divers).

Coenen from Simpelveld and W.J. Francotte from Vaals, who had worked for the clandestine magazine Je Maintiendrai in Amsterdam until the summer of 1944, joined the KP. They participated in the raid on the jail of Maastricht on September 2.” They went into hiding in the Diver’s Inn in Geulhem “where suspects and difficult people in hiding were detained and interrogated. Generally, Francotte took care of the surveillance of the “prisoners” because of his strongness. Both were arrested by the Germans on September 5th, 1944 (Mad Tuesday) during a resistance action. By order of Major Bernhardt, they were shot on the Cauberg (Valkenburg). There is a memorial stone and the monument for the fallen resistance people of Limburg on that spot.

L.O. - Kerkrade - survivor - Leader of the subdistrict Kerkrade of the resistance organisation LO. Worked together the Auβenministerium (a group that repatriated students forced to work in Germany to the Netherlands). After the arrest of the provincial L.O. leaders in June 1944 in Weert, he led the L.O. district of Heerlen for some time and, with the help of L.O. people and agents of the Auβenministerium, set up the strikingly effective intelligence service ID18 there. From Valkenburg he received his information from Paul Simons (real name: Pierre Schunck) during whose funeral he gave a farewell speech.
Cammaert writes in chapter 12: “Once again it turned out that the organically grown resistance activities functioned better and more effectively than those implanted in Limburg from other parts of the country. For example, in the summer of 1944, the intelligence service of the L.O. in the mining district was smoothly transformed into a military intelligence service, which after the liberation soon covered large parts of Limburg and provided the Americans with numerous services”

early resistance - priest - Valkenburg - survivor - Chaplain at the St. Nicolaas & Barbara parish in Valkenburg. Cammaert wrote: “Chaplain G.H. Hennekens copied in Valkenburg sermons of Von Galen, bishop of Münster, and his pastoral letters. He quoted them again and again during his Sunday sermons and did not hide his anti-German feelings. In the course of 1941 he came through officer H.A. van Roy of the municipal police of Valkenburg in contact with the group Smit, who declared themselves willing to take care of the distribution of the stencils.” The Smit group was a “circle of members of the resistance around former military officer J.L. Smit in Heerlen. They focused on collecting weapons and ammunition, the distribution (and sale) of the first illegal magazines such as Vrij Nederland, as well as the sale of photographs of the royal family. With the money that was earned from selling these photos, the costs were combated.” Because of his popularity Von Galen was not arrested but placed under house arrest. Chaplain Hennekens might have hoped that too, but he was arrested on February 2, 1942. He was brought to the concentration camp in Dachau near Munich
By endangering himself publicly, he resisted to the nazi’s in a way that many did not understand. But he has given a signal and encouraged others to resist. In September 1955 he was appointed pastor in Rothem. Retired early due to health problems due to his camp period. Moved back to Valkenburg. Buried: St. Agnes, Bunde

early resistance - Valkenburg - war victim - Professional cyclist from 1932 to 1940. When he was eight years old, he moved to Eindhoven with his parents. In 1932 he set a new Dutch hour record (42.282) in Tilburg and on August 25th, 1933, on the wooden cycle track in Maasniel near Roermond, a world hour record of 44.588 kilometers. But that was already broken after 4 days.
He was able to live well from cycling and could have earned even much more in Germany, but since Hitler was in power there, he was not interested.
He closed his pub and joined the resistance. He and his wife were involved in helping Jewish people in hiding. He attracted attention and he went into hiding himself. A few months before the liberation, Jan van Hout was arrested during a raid in the natural swimming pool De IJzeren Man and transferred to the camps Vught and Amersfoort and finally to the German labor camp Neuengamme, where he died of exhaustion.

In an interview with students, Gerda Schunck-Cremers (DB) said about the successful robbery at the Valkenburg distribution office: “Mrs. Jaspers kept the stamps and other documents for one night in her house in Klimmen. She was not in the resistance, but occasionally helped them.” She too risked her life. For example, her distribution stamkaart (main card) and the one of Gerda S.-C. were made available to a printer in Amsterdam to copy them. The printing shop was busted, but fortunately that had no consequences for these women. She also sometimes made her house available for meetings.

USA, 743th Tank Bat. - war victim - Member of the Charlie Company of the 743rd tank battalion in tank nr 0—18 He died of his injuries. He and Amos Gathin Jr. from the same company are now buried in the USA. The 743th tank battalion was connected to the 119th infantry division.
Short story of the 743rd Tank Battalion in the vicinity of South-Limburg: “At the same time, Charlie Company went eastward into Oud Valkenburg which was supposed to contain friendly troops. Instead the place was occupied by German infantry. When enemy artillery began to range in, the tanks set up a defense in nearby Valkenburg. The 743rd Tank Battalion was counting casualties again by enemy artillery fire. As the 30th Infantry Division together with the 125th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron pushed along the Maastricht - Aachen road, the Germans threw in heavy concentrations of shellfire.”

L.O. - K.P. - Klimmen - survivor - Bep (B.J.C.) van Kooten, temporarily leader of the LO Klimmen and, for the sub-district of Valkenburg, contact person to the KP (“Knokploegen”, armed groups), sabotage specialist of the KP. Towards the end of the war, the rayon (subdistrict) of Klimmen worked closely together with the rayon of Valkenburg, so here follows a bit more about this village from Het Verborgen Front = The Hidden Front, chapter 6b VIII.5.7. by Dr. A. Cammaert.
Some group members were (also) part of the O.D. and maintained contacts with aid workers in the Heerlen region, including with chaplain Berix. These connections date from the Smit period or were brought on the way by the chaplain of Voerendaal, A.F.J. Vondenhoff. In the autumn of 1943, Bep van Kooten established the connection of the subdistrict with the Heerlen district. In addition to Klimmen it included the villages of Hulsberg, Voerendaal, Ransdaal and Ubachsberg. Van Kooten took charge and appointed Miss M.Th. Jaspers as a messenger. Because of Van Kooten’s fast career in Limburg resistance, the actual leadership rested with Brouwers who soon succeeded him. G.H. Meurders and curate A.J. Gibbels, who had to work under very difficult circumstances because the pastor was pro-German, were his deputies.
Biography at the website of his rugby club.
At the end of the war, Van Kooten was looking for a suitable depot for weapons and a shooting range for the “Knokploegen” of South Limburg. So this cave had to be evacuated.
In the second half of July 1944, Crasborn and Van Kooten moved to Swalmen, at the invitation of J. Frantzen. They found shelter on the monumental farm De Baxhof of the Poels family on the edge of the village. Bep was commissioned by Crasborn to travel through the lines via the recently liberated Valkenburg and Maastricht to the headquarters of Prince Bernhard in Brussels, where he was appointed commander of the Stoottroepen in Limburg, see the chapter Valkenburg is free below. As a member of the Dutch army, he participated in the actions against the new republic of Indonesia after the war.

early resistance - Valkenburg - war victim - The weekly magazine Het Land van Valkenburg wrote about him: “He refused to sign a declaration of loyalty and went into hiding. Arrested (date unknown) for spreading illegal literature.”
At the Oorlogsgravenstichting there is a source link where he is mentioned as a student at the Katholieke Economische Hoogeschool in Tilburg. Furthermore, contrary to the above, we read there: “Employed at the Arado Flugzeug Werke in Brandenburg upon Havel. Was arrested on October 6, 1943. The reason was a statement in a private conversation held at the beginning of September. He was sentenced to two months in prison. Around 15 December the family received a message from the Swedish Society that Nyst had not been released, but transferred to a Arbeitserziehungslager in Gross Beeren and from there to the concentration camp in Sachsenhausen near Oranienburg. In the meantime on 18 February 1944 the family in Maastricht was informed that on January 18th, 1944 he had succumbed from ‘Herzschwäche’ (cardiac insufficiency) in Gross Beeren.“

police - NSDAP - survivor - Probably the worst sadist of the Außendienststelle Maastricht of the Reichssicherheitshauptamt. Arrested resistance fighters first ended up here. That is why the RSHA, in the person of Nitsch, also has a place in this story about Valkenburg. Read about that office in Dutch: mestreechonline.nl. It says among other things: “In 1941 the Außendienststelle was housed in the so-called “White House” on the corner of Prins Bisschopssingel and Lambertuslaan. Then, until September 7, 1944, they moved into the house of a deported Jewish family on Wilhelminasingel (now number 71) … Especially in that house gruesome scenes took place.”
1925-1932, Nitsch used to be a shop assistant. From 1932 member of the nazi party NSDAP, 1933 railway police, 1935 criminal assistant of the border police. Arrests in collaboration with the SS. At the end of May 1940 he was sent to Holland, Sipo task force in Arnhem. Shortly in Enschede, came to Maastricht on April 7, 1941. Soon only research on and combating of organized resistance and espionage.
Cammaert, Chapter 6a-V. Fighting the Resistance: "With great dedication, Nitsch dedicated himself to his new position, completely blind to the suffering he inflicted on his victims and their beloved ones. … His colleagues called him the “head hunter”. He lived up to that nickname: ninety-three persons of whom Nitsch was official in charge were killed in concentration camps; hundreds were sent by him to German camps, many of whom returned disabled and completely broken after the war. In addition, Nitsch was involved in many murders, of which he committed at least ten himself. At least fifty-eight people were tortured by him.”

Rennes / Renesse, van
Godert
∗ 0000-00-00
Heteren
† 1903-02-16
police - Valkenburg - NSB - survivor - On the genealogy page of the Van Rennes family we read that both forms of the surname occur. Renesse however is the old version.
Before the war the Netherlands was very heavily pillared (divided into mutually encapsulated religious / political worlds). As a typical child of his time, the reformed Godert van Renesse was a catholics hater. However, when he met a Catholic girl where he lived at that time, in Arcen in North Limburg, he felt forced to become a Catholic in order to get married. Then he landed in Oss, where he was involved in the solution of a very violent gang war, which was also directed against the Marechaussee. The local brigade received an award from Queen Wilhelmina, who was also a catholics hater. This led to offended members of local police units, which were predominantly Catholic. We read on the site of the Politieacademie the story of the resulting Oss affair. This led to a countrywide outbreak of mutual hatred between “the” Catholics and “the” Protestants. In the end it says: “A number of members of the Brigade Oss felt so disregarded that they decided for the National Socialist movement at the beginning of the war. After the war, they paid for this with forced release. The price for their membership in a treasonous organization.” Did they need a movement that claimed to be above all differences and knew only “comrades”? Maybe Godert van Rennes thought like that too.
He was stationed in Valkenburg during the war and was responsible, among other things, for the raid in Pierre Schunck’s laundry and for sending away Jewish children who were not allowed to go sledding on the Cauberg.

early resistance - police - Valkenburg - survivor - Veldwachter (local policeman appointed by the municipality) in Valkenburg until december 1941. Was a member of the early resistance group around J.Smit in Heerlen. The earliest data on this group are from the end of 1940 and early 1941. Smit, a professional soldier demobilized in July 1940, subsequently worked for a while at the Marechaussee in Heerlen and in the spring of 1941 he resigned and started working as a lathe operator at the Oranje Nassau mine and started with other former soldiers and resistance group, most of them from the former 13th Infantry Regiment, in which mainly soldiers from South Limburg had served and of which he himself had also been a part.
Veldwachter Van Roy was also welcome there. In the course of 1941 he brought chaplain Hennekens into contact with Smit. In December 1941 he resigned too, but first stole some helmets. Was arrested on 02/02/1942 and sentenced to 3 years in prison; was in various camps. Escape from camp on April 4th, 1945.
