|Church Towers are easy to find. There are a number of villages around Valkenburg, most of which belonged to the then municipality of Valkenburg-Houthem. The assistance to people in hiding L.O. was organized per Catholic parish. Because the church was the only organization that could survive during the occupation. The duikhoofden (divers’ chiefs) in these villages were sort of local L.O. leaders.|

|early resistance - Hulsberg - war victim - Student’s resistance. Law student, refused to sign the declaration of loyalty and joined the resistance movement (he mapped activities of the Germans at Dutch airports and passed them on to the allies), arrested on 08/12/1943, suspected of conspiracy. After staying in various prisons, he was eventually sentenced to death by a special court of war and then shot for illegal possession of weapons.|
