Maasbracht is located 13 km southwest of Roermond on the Maas river. As in many places, the resistance began quite early in Maasbracht, with help for French-speaking prisoners of war who had escaped from Germany. For a while, these people came to Maasbracht on a cargo ship from Roermond. [1.3]
As in all Maas villages, the refugees were often taken across the river in rowing boats, as the bridges and ferries were too heavily guarded.
By chance, a small group in Maasbracht who wanted to resist came into contact with resistance people in Amsterdam through a sister of J.H.M. Puts, before making contact with resistance groups in the region. After this, the local group of the LO underground aid organization was set up in June 1943. [1.6]
