Valkenburg ligt in het midden van Zuid-Limburg. Het is de plaats waar het Provinciaal Verzetsmonument staat, waarvan u op deze website een digitale afspiegeling vindt. [1]
Dat monument is opgericht op de plek, waar vlak voor de bevrijding van Zuid-Limburg op Dolle Dinsdag [2] twee verzetsmensen werden neergeschoten door Duitsers op de terugtocht, die in hotels van deze toeristenplaats verbleven. [3]
De kern van onze kennis over het Valkenburgs verzet vormen notities en interviews van Pierre Schunck, die tijdens de bezetting leider was van de plaatselijke LO (aanvankelijk Limburgse Onderduikershulp, later opgegaan in de Landelijke Onderduikershulp, de Landelijke organisatie voor hulp aan onderduikers.)
Die notities heeft hij pas na de bevrijding op schrift gezet, en ze komen overeen met hetgeen hij aan ons, zijn kinderen, altijd heeft verteld. Uit zijn nalatenschap is deze geschiedenis van het Valkenburgs verzet samengesteld, aangevuld met enkele andere bronnen. [4]
Het waren de verhalen van hoe het begon met vrij onschuldige burgerlijke ongehoorzaamheid, die ongemerkt uitgroeide tot de levensgevaarlijke hulp aan mensen, die dat nodig hadden. Dit is typisch voor de meeste verzetsmensen: ze wisten niet waar ze aan begonnen.
Tijdens de oorlog heeft Pierre Schunck nog niets opgeschreven, want hij was zeer voorzichtig. Dat was, zoals achteraf is gebleken, een wijs besluit. Wanneer u de verhalen leest op deze website, dan zult u ze steeds weer tegenkomen: arrestaties als gevolg van aantekeningen, ledenlijsten en andere onvoorzichtigheden. De leden van de Valkenburgse LO hebben allemaal de oorlog overleefd.
De slachtoffers van de Cauberg [5] behoorden tot de Knokploeg Zuid-Limburg, maar hielden zich schuil in de "Duikherberg" in Geulhem, die door de LO was ingericht.
Bij de terugtocht van het Duitse leger uit onze streek, in september 1944, zijn er vooral aan Duitse kant heel wat militairen gesneuveld. Wij besteden hieraan een speciaal hoofdstuk. [6]
