Toen in 1943 de overgrote meerderheid van de studenten de loyaliteitsverklaring niet wilde ondertekenen en ook als gevolg daarvan steeds meer onderduikers in de streek tussen Maas en Peel belandden, kregen enkele mensen van de OD in Venlo het idee, ze tot militairen op te leiden. Zij hadden een soort partizanencommando voor ogen, dat zich in die bosrijke streek goed zou kunnen verschuilen. De keus voor één van die kampen viel op het Bovensbos bij Helden, zie Open Street Map, in de buurt van de boerderij van Cornelis Krans.
Uit het proefschrift van Cammaert, Hoofdstuk VIII De Ordedienst, pp. 883: De duikkampen bij Helden en Sevenum leest u hier een beknopte samenvatting.

Cornelis Krans stelde vijf demontabele kippenloodsen ter beschikking, die plaats boden aan 40 tot 50 onderduikers. Het kamp kreeg de naam „Vrij Nederland“. Door het grote aantal medeweters, van wie sommigen het kamp meer als een soort zomerkamp schenen te zien, deden al gauw verhalen de ronde. De N.S.B.-man H. Kessels hoorde die ook en fietste er op donderdag 15 juli 1943 heen. Enkele landarbeiders wezen hem de weg, omdat hij zei, ook te willen onderduiken. Hij vond wat hij zocht en sprak hierover met zijn partijgenoten Kluytmans en Maessen. Een dag later deed hij aangifte bij de politie. Wachtmeester Evers, een vriend van het verzet, beloofde er de volgende dag werk van te maken en gaf meteen alarm. Besloten werd, Kessels zo spoedig mogelijk te liquideren. Dat gebeurde meteen, de nacht van vrijdag 16 op zaterdag 17 juli. Hij werd neergeschoten en met liet zijn lijk liggen, om onbekende redenen. Dat maakte alles nog erger. De SiPo (SicherheitsPolizei) uit Maastricht o.l.v. Max Strobel/Ströbel stelde een onderzoek in en hoorde van Kluytmans over de ontdekking van Kessels. De politiecommandant in Helden-Panningen, opper Alphons van der Mullen gaf aan het verzet door, dat er een grootscheepse razzia gepland werd. Terwijl zij op versterking van de Ordnungspolizei wachtten, arresteerden de SiPo-mensen het echtpaar Krans en enkele andere mensen, waaronder het joodse gezin De Jong uit Nijmegen, dat vlak bij de boerderij in een ondergrondse schuilplaats zat. Zij en Cornelis Krans overleefden de oorlog niet.
In België ontstond direct over de grens een vergelijkbaar initiatief, dat ook daar uitging van oud-militairen: het Geheim Leger zone II/Limburg. Ook dat ging niet goed, zoals u daar kunt lezen. In dit dicht bevolkt deel van Europa was het verzet in kleine, vrij zelfstandig opererende groepen vele malen effectiever en veiliger.

Er waren ook een paar kampen voor onderduikers in de Schadijkse bossen bij Horst (Open Street Map), maar die waren niet bedoeld als trainingskampen.
