Bijtjesdag in Limburg. De bedoeling van deze site is, de herinnering aan de geschiedenis van de bezetting in Limburg levend te houden. Ere wie ere toekomt, maar niet in de vorm van ongedifferentieerde heldenverering. Er waren bijvoorbeeld verzetsmensen met antisemitische vooroordelen, hoewel ze toch ook joden hielpen. Maar een ander verhaal is, dat er na de bevrijding opeens overal mensen opdoken, die zogenaamd bij het verzet waren geweest en opeens walgelijke wraakacties gingen organiseren, „uit naam van het verzet.“ Hoe was dat mogelijk?
De eerste Nederlandse stad die werd bevrijd, was Maastricht. Er was een organisatie van door de Duitsers gedemobiliseerde Nederlandse militairen, die zich Ordedienst noemden. Zij hadden zich tot doel gesteld, het machtsvacuüm te vullen, wanneer de Duitse troepen waren verdwenen en de Geallieerden nog niet waren gearriveerd. Hun gemeenschappelijk motief was de angst voor een communistische machtsgreep. Er waren OD-groepen die bovendien tijdens de bezetting verzet gepleegd hebben, daarbij denken wij bijvoorbeeld aan de zeer actieve groep rond de brandweercommandant Charles Bongaerts in Heerlen. Maar er waren er ook, die uitdrukkelijk GEEN verzet wilden plegen en zich uitsluitend op de bevrijdingsdagen richtten. Daarom kan de OD als geheel niet tot het verzet worden gerekend.
Bizar was de situatie in Maastricht, waar tijdens de bevrijding twee en voor een tijd zelfs drie elkaar beconcurrerende OD’s waren. Omdat zij allen hoopten, in de BS te worden opgenomen, gingen zij een massaal een zeer onkritisch wervingsbeleid voeren. Zij merkten niet, dat hier ook onderwereldfiguren op af kwamen, die het alleen om de wapens te doen was. En hoewel de oud-gediende OD-leiding de bevolking en hun eigen nieue leden onmiskenbaar had opgeroepen, zich van wraakacties te onthouden, was het precies dat, wat meteen gebeurde. Wat eigenlijk het geordende arresteren van collaborateurs had moeten worden, liep volledig uit de hand. Nie alleen achtergebleven nationaalsocialisten werden bij elkaar gedreven, ook meisjes en vrouwen, die iets met een Duitser gehad zouden hebben, of gewoon omdat ze Duits waren. Sommigen hadden zelfs voor het verzet gewerkt en hun Duitse nationaliteit gebruikt, om mensen te verbergen onder het mom van trouwe partijleden te zijn. Na de bevrijding konden sommigen alleen aan het kamp ontkomen met behulp van Joodse mensen die zij hadden gered of van echte verzetsmensen. Maar daarvan begrepen die wraakzuchtigen blijkbaar niets. Wanneer we de vele foto’s bekijken, waarop zogeheten moffenmeiden worden kaalgeschoren, dan vallen de lachende gezichten van de omstanders meteen op. Dat had niets met de strijd voor de vrijheid en tegen discriminatie tijdens de bezetting te maken, ook niet wanneer er soms ook echte verzetsmensen aan hebben deelgenomen. In Valkenburg is op het nippertje een echte verzetsman gered, die tijdens de oorlog op het distributiekantoor zeer succesvol bonnen en andere documenten voor de vele onderduikers had gestolen, maar altijd had gedaan alsof hij bruine sympathieën had. Bijna had een stel halve garen hem „terecht“-gesteld, die zo deden alsof ze verzet hadden gepleegd, hoewel ze nog halve kinderen waren. Twee collega’s van de LO, Pierre Schunck en Jan van Westerhoven (Pater Ferdinand sscc), konden ze ervan overtuigen dat dat een grote vergissing zou zijn. Minder geluk had een echte collaborateur, de 26‑jarige landwachter Funs Savelberg. Er werd door iemand beweerd, dat die door een Amerikaans krijgsgerecht ter dood was veroordeeld. Een aanwezige Amerikaanse officier zei „kill him“ en een van die zelfbenoemde OD-ers was maar wat trots, dat hij alsnog tot de overwinnaars mocht behoren. De ware schuldige van deze moord is degene, die het leugenverhaal van die veroordeling heeft verteld. Maar schuld treft ook de aanwezige officier, die dat niet heeft nagetrokken. Maar in dit geval trof het echte verzet zeker geen schuld. De schutter is na de oorlog vrijgesproken, omdat hij te goeder trouw heeft gehandeld.
