Eén bijzonder schrijnende zaak deed zich voor in de Limburgse dorpen Schaesberg, Nieuwenhagen en Ubach over Worms, die het huidige Landgraaf vormen.
Eind mei 1942 wordt in Schaesberg een man gearresteerd op verdenking van diefstal. Al snel vermoeden agenten dat er meer aan de hand is: de arrestant draagt niet alleen een afbeelding van Lenin bij zich, maar ook een exemplaar van het communistische blad De Vonk. De zaak wordt overgedragen aan de de SD/SiPo van Maastricht. Als die huiszoeking bij de arrestant doen, vinden zij een zeer verdacht stuk papier: een namenlijst van mensen die contributie betalen of betrokken zijn bij een communistische groepering. De leden op de lijst zijn allemaal inwoners van Schaesberg, Nieuwenhagen en Ubach over Worms.
De drie NSB-burgemeesters van deze dorpen komen direct in actie: ze organiseren op 30 en 31 mei 1942 een massa-arrestatie. Met een aantal medewerkers schuimen ze de straten van hun dorpen af en arresteren tientallen verdachten. Alle mannen wier naam op de ‘communistenlijst‘ voorkomt, worden overgebracht naar het hoofdkantoor van de SD in Maastricht. Daar onderwerpen de beruchte Richard Nitsch en diens chef Max Strobel hen aan langdurige en vaak gewelddadige verhoren.
De meeste arrestanten blijken inderdaad betrokken bij het vervaardigen van De Vonk en De Waarheid. De 49-jarige Waltherus van den Beemd uit Schaesberg, bijvoorbeeld, al vóór de oorlog lid van de Communistische Partij Nederland, organiseert redactievergaderingen en helpt bij het drukken van de krantjes. Maar tegenover Nitsch ontkent hij dat ten stelligste. „Nitsch nam daar geen genoegen mee,“ herinnert Van den Beemd zich na de oorlog. „Hij deed mij handboeien aan, welke van scherpe ijzeren tandjes waren voorzien. Deze kneep hij geheel dicht, zodat het bloed uit mijn polsen kwam. De volgende dag waarschuwde bij mij en zei: ‘Spreken zal je, al zal deze strijd nog veertien dagen duren.’“
Het is onduidelijk of van den Beemd tijdens zijn gewelddadige verhoren iets heeft losgelaten.
Dat zal weinig hebben uitgemaakt: Op een klein aantal na worden alle arrestanten schuldig bevonden aan lidmaatschap van een communistische groepering. Zij belanden via kamp Amersfoort in kampen als Neuengamme, Buchenwald en Rathenau. Onder hen zijn tenminste zeven mannen die slechts één of twee keer een krantje hebben gelezen. De 27-jarige Johan Veldhoven bijvoorbeeld had volgens zijn broer Dirk één keer een exemplaar van De Vonk gelezen: ‘Verspreid had hij dit blad niet,’ verklaarde Dirk Veldhoven na de oorlog stellig. Johan Veldhoven kon zelf geen verklaring afleggen, daar hij op 6 november 1942 in Neuengamme overleed.
In totaal vonden in deze zaak zestien mannen de dood. Waltherus van den Beemd keerde als een van de weinige arrestanten na de oorlog terug: in april 1945 werd hij door Russische troepen bevrijd uit kamp Rathenau. Zijn linkerbovenbeen was bevroren geweest door de urenlange appels, verklaarde hij, en ‘ten gevolge van de mishandelingen door Nitsch en in de kampen ben ik niet meer geschikt om zware arbeid te te verrichten’.
Maricus van de Wetering (37), Heinrich Tholen en Albert Koenders (54) uit Schaesberg, Johannes Tersteeg (52) en Cornelis Rombouts (53) uit Nieuwenhagen en Gerrit Jansen (54) uit Ubach over Worms stierven allen in Neuengamme of Buchenwald.
