Jos Narinx was a painter and one of the founders of the Limburgse Kunstkring [1] (Limburg Art Circle). Arrested on June 24, 1942 for anti-German sentiments and distribution of illegal literature. [2]
For he was allegedly a distributor of the communist underground magazine De Vonk. [3.1][3.2]
The traitor Engwirda played an important role in his arrest and that of 27 other people in a single day. [3.1]
The Digitaal Monument Neuengamme calls his arrest a mistake, but unfortunately they do not say why. [4]
It was one year after the start of Operation Barbarossa. [5]
Operation Barbarossa, the German code name for the German attack on the Soviet Union, abruptly ended the ambiguous relations between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. [3.1]
The result was much harsher treatment of communist resisters by the German authorities. The fact that sometimes a non-communist was also affected was not so important. Perhaps this was also the case with Jos Narinx. For example, he does not appear in the index of fallen communists of the CPN in Limburg. [6]
In the concentration camps, communists and those who were considered to be communists had little chance of survival.
Perhaps there was an additional reason why Jos Narinx did not survive the camp. According to josnarinx.nl [7], he was a very impulsive man, and the wonder there if that got him into even more trouble after his arrest.
He is listed in the “Erelijst 1940-1945” (Honor Roll of the Dutch Parliament). [9]
