Fort de Kock is the old name for Bukittinggi in Indonesia. Carlos’ father was an officer in the KNIL, the colonial army in what was then the Dutch East Indies. Carlos attended the IC high school on the Leunseweg in Venray. When he was ordered to report for work in the German armaments industry, he went into hiding and attempted to go to England to serve with the Allies. Arrested while trying to cross the Spanish border. He reached Buchenwald on October 31 via the Royallieu prison camp in Compiegne, north of Paris.
