Before the war, Jacob Buikes was a sergeant-airplane mechanic in the Royal Dutch Navy. Shortly after the surrender he was put on wachtgeld and subsequently joined an illegal organization in Den Helder.
… On October 27, 1941, Buikes was arrested in his home by Germans and then taken via Amsterdam and Scheveningen to Maastricht, where his wife last visited him. [1#2]
In the Netherlands, wachtgeld is an allowance paid to public servants or politicians who have lost their posts, including military personnel who became unemployed after the surrender of the Dutch armed forces in May 1940.
Was arrested on October 27, 1941. The reason given was espionage. Deported to the Oranjehotel [2] in Scheveningen. In March 1942 he was transferred from the Oranjehotel to Maastricht and finally to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp in Oranienburg, where he was shot. Details: 3rd OD trial.
