Antoine Fauchey fought at the Grebbeberg in May 1940 as a reserve cavalry sergeant. He was arrested on September 14, 1941 on suspicion of espionage (Book of the Dead Oranjehotel [7]) as a result of the Englandspiel (England game) [1] and thus became part of the espionage trial against the group around Hans Zomer. [2]
While awaiting trial, he was incarcerated in the increasingly crowded Oranjehotel [3] in Scheveningen until March 1942 and, like all arrested members of the Zomer group, had to appear before the court-martial in the so-called Maastricht OD trial. This was pending from March to April 1942 in the Third Minderbroedersklooster in Maastricht. He was sentenced to death on April 22, 1942, and executed at Sachsenhausen on May 11, 1942, along with 23 other condemned.
These 24 names are listed on a monument in the square next to the main building of Maastricht University.
