The fallen resistance people in Limburg
Architect Willem Kroes is referred to as Herman Kroes in the Book of the Dead of the Oranje Hotel [10], but as his file with the Oorlogsgravenstichting (War Graves Commission) indicates, that was his father. [1]
He enabled an employee to escape who was wanted by the Gestapo. He became involved with Hans Zomer’s group [2] in the Englandspiel (England game) [3] and thus got via the Oranjehotel in Scheveningen [4] to Maastricht where he was sentenced to death. [5]
On August 23, 2017, a memorial stone was unveiled for him in Amersfoort at Paulus Buyslaan 19 [6], which reads, among other things:
… He was married to Helena Maria Leontina Käller on May 11, 1926. By profession he was an architect. He was arrested for espionage and possession of weapons and tried at the Maastricht OD trial. He was convicted and deported to Sachsenhausen. There he was shot on his wedding day, May 11, 1942.
He is listed in the “Erelijst 1940-1945” (Honor Roll of the Dutch Parliament). [7]
