 04-10-1920 Asten      05-09-1944 America (L) (23)

The grocer Frits de Bruijn lived in Asten. Son of the grocers Petrus Johannes Gijsbertus de Bruijn and Johanna Maria Sanders. Unmarried. Roman Catholic. Member of resistance, belonging to the Knokploeg-Bakel and member of the pilot center De Zwarte Plak in the Peel, whose members were engaged in housing crashed Allied flying personnel. [1]
On the evening of Mad Tuesday (“Dolle Dinsdag”, September 5, 1944 [2]), De Bruijn was caught between Griendtsveen and Zeilberg together with Mart van den Eijnden in sabotaging the Venlo-Eindhoven railroad line, for the German army an important connection between the Ruhr and the front. This cost both their lives. Given the injuries later found on the two resistance fighters, they were beaten to death by the Germans.
At the spot where this took place, a monument has been erected in their memory [3] and in front of the Poels farm, where their base of operations was, a memorial cross. [4]

See the death certificate 30/1945 at the municipality of Asten. [5]
