The fallen resistance people in Limburg
pers.Valkenburg 1940-1945
Jean was registered at the civil registry as Johannes Michael and grew up in Schin-op-Geul. He was employed by the French railway company Wagons Lits and he was, with the help of his entire family, a member of the French-Dutch group Dutch-Paris [1], which helped refugees, especially Jews.
He was arrested on February 12, 1944.
He fell under the German category of Nacht und Nebel prisoner. In this program, many prisoners disappeared without any trace.
Many details on his family’s website [3]
Among other things with the question: “Who can help us prove that Jean Michel Caubo helped Jews in occupied Paris?”
They need this so that he can be recognized by Yad Vashem as a Righteous Among the Nations. We have translated this appeal. [4]
He received the following honors:
The Franco-British Cross of Honor, the Order of a Knight of the Cross of Lorraine, and a certificate from the President of the United States signed by General Dwight D. Eisenhower. His name is carved in marble in the crypt of the cemetery of honor in Senlis, fifty kilometers from Paris. [3]
To commemorate him and Albert Laeven, a memorial plaque was erected in front of the parish church in Schin-op-Geul. It was temporarily removed due to administrative problems (approval) with the municipality, but is now back in its old place. [6]
