2nd candle [1]: Brought to Valkenburg as a Jewish child by the resistance

Guy Caelen with Mary de Goede, Piet Cohen and Philip Soesan

Kom vanavond met verhalen
Hoe de oorlog is verdwenen
En herhaal ze duizend malen
Telkens weer zal ik wenen

Leo Vroman
Come and tell what’s oft been told
Of how the war went by
And repeat it thousandfold
Each time again I’ll cry

Translation: Arnold Schunck

In St. Gerlachus Church in Houthem, Guy Caelen introduced Mary van Gelder, Piet Cohen and Philip Soesan. Briefly, each told the story of the journey by train at the hand of an unknown uncle or aunt to South Limburg.

There were several resistance groups in Limburg and many individuals who specialized in rescuing Jewish children from the crèche opposite the Hollandsche Schouwburg, both of which served as deportation centers for Jews in Amsterdam. Particularly noteworthy are Jaap Musch and his associates like Herman Stakenborg in southern Limburg and the group around Hanna van de Voort in northern Limburg.
