Point 13 – Children, Art and Peace

Marij van Aken

Former teacher and artist Marij van Aken, as a member of the Art Circle Henri Jonas, is always happy to participate in all peace activities in Valkenburg aan de Geul. She designed the Social Sofa Peace and Freedom and now she offers children the opportunity to think about war and peace through a drawing.

On September 17, there was an activity for children related to the liberation commemoration in Valkenburg. On round plates the children were encouraged to make a drawing.

A heart and a butterfly were already drawn on them. I told the children that the heart symbolized peace and the butterfly symbolized freedom, both of which are very important. The heart also formed the center of a flower, which the children could complete according to their own ideas.

There was also a lot of additional drawing and writing.
It was a successful activity with many enthusiastic little participants.
