Double weave: two contrasting layers interpenetrate each other. If e.g. the dark layer is above, then the light is below. Thus, on the “left” side you can see a reversed negative of the “right” side.
This weave has a very long tradition. Typical double fabrics are Piqué, Côtelé and Matelassé. Objectives of this weaving technique are e.g. a larger volume and better heat insulation through more air entrapment. For example, the Coptic double tissues were famous.
