Nijmegen behoort niet tot de Nederlandse provincie Limburg. Maar in de tijd dat plaatsvond wat hieronder beschreven wordt, behoorde het Nijmeegse district van de L.O. wel bij Limburg, en daarom staat het op deze website. Meer hierover.
Nadat op 4 juli 1944 op de Willemsweg in Nijmegen de van verraad verdachte Willie de Kadt door het verzet was doodgeschoten, werd twee dagen later, op 6 juli in de avond in het Kronenburgerpark de Duitse Obergefreiter Otto Geschefsky met een pistoolschot vermoord. Op 7 juli werd in de Spoorstraat weer een Duitse militair neergeschoten. Rauter gaf hierop opdracht elf Nijmeegse verzetslieden die wegens verschillende activiteiten in Kamp Amersfoort en Kamp Vught gevangen zaten, als represaille te fusilleren. Zo werden in Kamp Amersfoort op 21 juli de acht Nijmegenaren (J.A. van Eldert, A. Wagter, E.G. van Geuns, C.C. Toussaint, H. Linssen, J. Rodriguez, P. Span en P.L. Treytel) opgeroepen en in de bunker van het kamp opgesloten. Tegen de avond arriveerde een vrachtauto die hen vervoerde naar de Leusderheide. De commandant en twee officieren volgden in een luxe auto. Nadat zij eerst een kuil hadden gegraven, moesten de Nijmegenaren hun jassen van achter over het hoofd trekken en werden zij in het licht van de koplampen doodgeschoten. In Kamp Vught werden als represaille voor de aanslagen op de Duitse militairen in Nijmegen op 21 juli ook nog drie Nijmeegse verzetslieden gefusilleerd: Johannes H. Evers, Jean Maurice Muller en Antonius J. Kuerten
