Josephus Hubertus Theodorus Colleije (Colleye) (Jozef)

 27-07-1921 Eys (Wittem)      25-01-1949 Nijmegen (27)
- Police - Unorganized resistance - Simpelveld - Engelandvaarders -

Information about Jozef Colleije we find mainly at the website of the municipality of Simpelveld:In the late 30’s and early 40’s he was in the ceramic art workshop in Tegelen. To avoid being called up for forced labor, he applied for police training in Schalkhaar, where he realized he had to be careful about what he said. After this training, he became a constable in the police. He also got involved in the underground, mainly to help people in need. Being aware of the dangers, he preferred to work alone. He helped to bring prisoners of war, pilots, students and Jews to safety.
Because of these activities and the intention to go to England with a friend, the student Wim Eikendal, to join the Allied forces, both were arrested in Breda on July 26, 1943. He was suspected of killing an SS policeman and providing a hiding place for a Jewish girl.
     [1]
Although their plan failed, he is listed above as a so called engelandvaarder.

In his timeline at www.oorlogsbronnen.nl we read the following details:
On July 26, 1943, Joseph Hubertus Theodorus Colleije was arrested in Breda.
From December 16, 1943 to June 6, 1944, J. H. T. Colleye was imprisoned in the Oranje-Hotel. He was imprisoned for underground work and as an engelandvaarder.
Until September 5, 1944, Josephus Hubertus Theodorus Colleije was imprisoned in the Vught concentration camp.
Between September 5, 1944 and September 6, 1944, Josephus Hubertus Theodorus Colleije was transported from Vught concentration camp to Sachsenhausen.
Between September 7, 1944 and February 1, 1945, Josephus Hubertus Theodorus Colleije was imprisoned in Sachsenhausen.
Between February 1, 1945 and May 5, 1945 Josephus Hubertus Theodorus Colleije was imprisoned in Mauthausen.
As of an unknown date, Josephus Hubertus Theodorus Colleije was liberated at Mauthausen
    . [2]
The main camp was liberated on May 5, 1945.

Josephus Hubertus Theodorus (Joseph) Colleije died after the liberation as a result of the starvation and exhaustion suffered in the prisons and camps, and was subsequently buried in Eys. Since his parents moved to Simpelveld, he too is registered there as a war victim.  [1]

His name is on the war memorial in Simpelveld. [3]
