The fallen resistance people in Limburg
The resistance activities of Harry Meijer, a student, teacher of classical languages and courier, in whose parental home couriers from the ten L.O. districts of Limburg regularly arrived, [1] consisted of distributing ration cards and stamps to hidden people and distributing the resistance magazine Christofoor. He was a personal friend of Jan Hendrikx (Ambrosius). On August 12, 1944, Meijer was arrested at home and taken to Maastricht. Shortly before the liberation of that city, he and ten others were transported to Vught via Germany. [2]
In the days around Dolle Dinsdag (Mad Tuesday, September 5, 1944. [3.1], he and at least 450 other members of the resistance were shot at the camp’s execution site [4.4][4.5]. These were the Deppner executions. The camp was then evacuated as the front came closer and closer. The ashes of these last victims were no longer placed in the ash pits. They now rest in the Bloemendaal cemetery of honor. [3.2]
