The mayor replies to the Red Cross that he knows nothing about this person, “because the Americans took with them the identification tags during the days of liberation”.
In a letter to the Red Cross from November 24, 1945, he had still assumed that it was them who had taken the dog tags. So the question is: where did they end up?

                   In antwoord op Uw bovengenoemd
              schrijven deel ik U beleefd mede, dat
              op de gemeentelijke begraafplaats al-
              hier in een verzamelgraf 21 Duitse mi-
              litairen zijn begraven, van wie niets
              bekend is, daar door de Amerikanen in
              de bevrijdingsdagen de identiteits-
              plaatjes waren medegenomen.
