Was mayor of both Valkenburg and Houthem since 1917 and from 1935 also of Oud-Valkenburg. On October 1, 1940, so in the first year of the German occupation, the municipality of Valkenburg-Houthem came into being with the merger of Houthem, Oud-Valkenburg, Schin op Geul and Valkenburg. Hens remained mayor for the time being and tried to make the best of it. Dismissed in 1943, successor was Paul Schmalbach, a member of the nazi party NSB. Mayor again 1945–1953. We do not (yet) have details of his dismissal during the occupation. Buried in Valkenburg, cemetery on the Cauberg
