The source of the following, unless otherwise stated, is the book Oirlo in Oorlog 1940-1945 [1] (Oirlo in the war 1940-1945) by H. Raaijmakers, 2009. [1][6]
Gerard Nelissen was a factory worker from Oirlo. On Friday, November 17, 1944, a large raid for slave labor in Germany took place in several villages in the Venray area, including Oirlo, Castenray, Oostrum, Geysteren, Wanssum and Blitterswijck. Gerard and his four brothers were also kidnapped. Venray, Ysselsteyn and Merselo had already been liberated. The next day, November 18, at about 1:00 p.m., their train was strafed by British planes near the German village of Breyell [2], just over the border near Venlo. Gerard was seriously wounded and taken to a hospital in Dülken. After one day he died of his injuries. His name is on the war memorials in Venray [3] and Oirlo [4].
According to oorlogsgravenstichting.nl he died in Düsseldorf, 40 km to the east.[6#5]
In the same file, the municipality of Venray gives painter as his profession. [6#4]
He is buried in the Dutch Field of Honor in Düsseldorf. (Grave A630) [5][7]
