Duitse krijgsgevangenenkampen in de buurt van Limburg

Onder hun krijgsgevangenen hadden de nazi’s een soort klassenmaatschappij ingericht. De beste behandeling kregen soldaten met een Germaanse moedertaal. Zij werden al in 1940 vrijgelaten, omdat de nazi’s aan het begin van de oorlog nog hoopten de mensen van die ‘broedervolken’ voor het nationaal-socialisme te winnen. De Franstalige krijgsgevangenen werden beschouwd als tweederangs Ariërs en werden veel slechter behandeld. Hieronder komen vooral zij ter sprake. Het laagste niveau werd gevormd door de Oost-Europese en nog meer de Aziatische krijgsgevangenen uit de Sovjet-Unie. In de ogen van de nazi’s waren zij untermenschen. Een typisch voorbeeld van de behandeling van die beklagenswaardige mensen waren de Oezbeken in Kamp Amersfoort.
Volgens de Conventie van Genève is het geoorloofd krijgsgevangenen die tot de manschapsrangen behoren (dus geen officieren en onderofficieren) aan het werk te zetten, maar niet in de wapenindustrie. Deze regel werd steeds minder nageleefd naarmate de oorlog vorderde. Tegelijkertijd werd de behandeling van de krijgsgevangenen steeds slechter.
Vanuit de krijgsgevangenenkampen in het westen van Duitsland ontsnapten vanaf het begin van de oorlog mensen naar de bezette gebieden. De meesten moesten dagelijks heen en weer tussen het kamp en de plaats, waar zij dwangarbeid verrichtten, waardoor zij meer kans hadden, te ontsnappen. Vooral voor de Franstalige krijgsgevangenen (Walen en Fransen) die daar in het begin de grootste groep vormden, was de verleiding groot, te proberen te ontsnappen. De twee krijgsgevangenenkampen die het dichtst bij Limburg lagen waren Stalag (Stammlager) VI J Fichtenhain (bij Krefeld, 35 km ten oosten van Noord-Limburg) en Stalag VI H Arnoldsweiler (bij Düren, 40 km ten oosten van Zuid-Limburg). Deze kampen behoorden tot militair district VI (Wehrkreis VI, Münster) [1]
Sommigen die uit de twee bovengenoemde kampen wisten te ontsnappen, trokken eenvoudig in westelijke richting naar Limburg, maar sommigen hadden ook precieze aanwijzingen in het geheim toegestuurd gekregen door succesvolle voorgangers. Zij liepen bij voorkeur ’s nachts, omdat ze anders in hun versleten uniformen waren opgevallen. Zij konden aan de wegwijzers en andere borden zien, wanneer ze in Nederland waren aangekomen.

• In het krijgsgevangenenkamp (Stammlager) Stalag VI J in Fichtenhain bij Krefeld zouden 72.000 gevangenen hebben gezeten, die werden verdeeld over ongeveer 1.000 arbeidsdetachementen. [2]
  Het kamp werd gebruikt tussen oktober 1939 en oktober 1944. Daarna werd het noordwaarts verplaatst naar Dorsten vanwege de opmars van de Geallieerden.
  Cijfers over het aantal krijgsgevangenen variëren, maar er waren enkele tienduizenden in het gebied, waarvan de meesten waren gegroepeerd in arbeidsdetachementen van 20-50 gevangenen.

  De herinnering aan dit kamp wordt nog steeds gekoesterd door families van voormalige gevangenen. [5]
• Het Stalag Arnoldsweiler VI-H Arnoldsweiler lag vlak bij Düren aan de Roer. Na hun ontsnapping volgden de vluchtelingen vaak het verloop van de Roer, omdat zij wisten, dat die naar het westen stroomt en daarbij in de buurt van Roermond Duitsland verlaat. Zo hoefden zij niet de weg vragen.
  Van het kamp is niets meer over. Daaraan herinnert alleen een gedenkbord met de naam Gedenkstätte Stalag Arnoldsweiler. [4.2][7]

In Arnoldsweiler, vroeger behorend tot Merzenich, tegenwoordig een kerkdorp van Düren, werd in de nationaal-socialistische tijd vanaf 29 maart 1940 een omvangrijk barakkencomplex gebouwd, omgeven door wachttorens. Die 30 barakken vormden het krijgsgevangenenkamp Stalag (Stammlager) Arnoldsweiler VI-H. Naast het Stalag VI-G in Bonn was het het grootste Stammarbeitslager in het Rijnland.
Duizenden Poolse, Franse en later Russische krijgsgevangenen werden in Arnoldsweiler geïnterneerd voor dwangarbeid. Het kamp kon tot 800 krijgsgevangenen herbergen. In totaal doorliepen ongeveer 9200 krijgsgevangenen dit kamp. Deze mensen moesten onder vaak de wreedste omstandigheden dwangarbeid verrichten in bedrijven en fabrieken in de regio Düren en in de landbouw, omdat veel mannen in de Tweede Wereldoorlog als soldaat vochten. Voedsel en medische zorg waren uiterst slecht. Dit meldt de Poolse krijgsgevangene Peter Makucewicz, die vanaf februari 1942 in het Stammlager Arnoldsweiler zat, in zijn memoires. Ze moesten het uithouden in ijskoude cellen die niet groter waren dan twee passen. Alleen beweging hield hen warm en er zou eenmaal per dag een rantsoen zijn geweest in de vorm van koffie en 330 gram brood.
