Kamp Vught

Het kamp Vught, door de bezetters Polizeiliches Durchgangslager Herzogenbusch genoemd omdat het vlak bij ’s-Hertogenbosch stond, was het enige SS-kamp buiten Duitsland. Tegenwoordig is een deel van het voormalige kamp het nationaal monument Kamp Vught.

Vanuit Vught werden onder meer 15.000 Joden gedeporteerd, van wie bijna niemand de oorlog overleefde. Voor de Joden was Kamp Vught een doorgangskamp. De meeste Joden werden gedeporteerd naar het Drentse Westerbork en vandaar naar de Duitse vernietigingskampen in Polen. [1]

Eigenlijk was de bedoeling, er daarna een modelkamp van te maken, omwille van de openbare mening in Nederland, omdat de Nazi’s blijkbaar nog steeds hoopten, die aan hun kant te krijgen. Maar dat ging mis op 15 januari 1944 onder de sadistische commandant Hauptsturmführer Adam Grünewald.

In augustus en september 1944, terwijl de geallieerden steeds dichterbij kwamen, vonden op de schietbaan van kamp Vught executies van minstens 450 verzetsmensen plaats, waarvan ook veel Limburgse verzetsmensen slachtoffer werden, waaronder de topmensen van de LO, die op 21 juni 1944 in Weert waren gearresteerd. Deze Deppner-executies [3] vonden hun hoogtepunt rond Dolle Dinsdag [4]. Bij de aankomst van de geallieerden was het kamp verlaten. Duizenden gevangenen waren naar Duitsland gedeporteerd. De mannen naar Kamp Sachsenhausen en de vrouwen naar Kamp Ravensbrück. [1].

Op de executieplaats in het nabijgelegen bos staan een monument en een herdenkingsmuur met de namen van de 329 verzetsmensen die daar zijn doodgeschoten. [9]
De asputten achter het crematorium zijn de laatste rustplaats voor degenen, die daar zijn vermoord. [5]
