The fallen resistance people in Limburg
| Wiel Geurts
(Willem Hubert)
∗ 18-04-1912 Sittard
† 12-04-1945 Berga/Elster (32)
- People in hiding - Forced Labor - Sittard -

Wiel Geurts was arrested in Sittard on July 20, 1944 for evading employment in Germany. [1]
It does not seem to be entirely clear, where and when Wiel died. We often see this in the final stages of WWII. The SS dragged thousands of prisoners back and forth, partly as a means, to get rid of exhausted prisoners. Those transports are therefore called death marches, even when the victims did not have to walk. [2]
The places, where Wiel supposedly died, are also known to have had death marches there.
- According to oorlogsgravenstichting (War Graves Foundation) [6] he died on April 12, 1945 in Berga/Elster, KZ Schwalbe V. [3.1]
The camp was disbanded between April 10 and 12, 1945. 200 sick prisoners were taken by train to Dachau. 1,500 prisoners were forced to the death march to Theresienstadt/Leitmeritz. [3.2]
Also stated on the Sittard Monument: † 12 April 1945. [5] - According to vriendenkringneuengamme.nl [1] he died on April 24, 1945 in the Kdo. (Kommando = subcamp) Sandbostel of Neuengamme. In April 1945 about 9500 prisoners from Neuengamme concentration camp and its subcamps came to Sandbostel. [4]
