The former municipality of Berg & Terblijt included, in addition to the village of Berg, the hamlets of Terblijt, Vilt and Geulhem.
On 1 January 1945, a British Avro 683 Lancaster bomber crashed on a meadow in Vilt, where Zwaluwstraat is today. South Limburg had already been liberated since September. All eight crew members were killed. See photo opposite, showing the monument erected in memory at that spot. See also the overview of British aircraft crashed in the area of the municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul and the entry in our history of the Second World War in Valkenburg and its surroundings: Vilt: 1 January 1945
Between April 1945 and March 1946, an internment camp for wrong Dutch people existed in the school of Vilt. That’s what Dutch people were called, who had collaborated with the Nazis. They had to work in a nearby gravel pit. From June 1946, the former Jesuit convent in Valkenburg was used for the internment of those ex-Aryans. They had to work in the coal mines. The treatment of the internees was not always correct.

The municipality was incorporated into Valkenburg-Houthem in 1982 under the new name Valkenburg aan de Geul.
