Anton Schuhgraf

 16-05-1920 ?      17-09-1944 Valkenburg-Houthem (24)
- German Front Soldiers -

    Ysselsteyn TD 6-66

    Gemeentearchief Valkenburg:

  • 1945-10-30 Excavations Nieuweweg - In the week from October 15 to 20, 1945, 3 German soldiers were exhumed in Valkenburg. Report by Captain Croes, Identification, Recovery and Investigation Service (Dienst Identificatie, Berging en Opsporing).
  • 1945-10-30 Excavations Nieuweweg, list - Three corpses, only one of which could be identified: Anton Schuhgraf(s).
  • 1945-10-31 Excavations Nieuweweg, table - This table is on of the results of the excavations in the garden of Villa Leeuwenhorst on Nieuweweg in Valkenburg. They were carried out in the week of October 15 to 20, 1945 under the direction of Captain Croes of the Dienst Identificatie, Berging en Opsporing (Identification, Recovery and Investigation Service). Three bodies were exhumed, identified where possible and reburied in the General Cemetery on the Cauberg.
  • 1945-11-24 Questionnaire of the identification service - Questionnaire completed by the municipality. The date of the document is not yet known, so we have chosen a random date.
  • Anton Schuhgraf was killed along with two others in the park of Villa Leeuwenhorst, Nieuweweg 52, Valkenburg. They were operating a gun there that was sowing death and destruction among the U.S. forces that had begun the liberation of Valkenburg on September 14. It was discovered by a reconnaissance plane and set on fire by other planes. [1]
On his grave cross the date of death is written as September 14, 1944, [4] which is not correct. Jan Franssen, the chief of the Valkenburg police at the time, is also wrong about the date when he gives September 16, 1944. That was the day Henry E. Morgan died, the last known victim of one of the two guns on Leeuwenhorst. The cannons were discovered and eliminated one day later. [1]
Who his comrades killed at the same time were is not known. The three were given temporary burials on site and moved to the municipal cemetery on the Cauberg in mid-October. Now they lie in Ysselsteyn. [1]
The gun, a 75mm PAK 40 anti-tank gun [2], now stands as part of a war memorial in front of the town hall. [3]
