German Front Soldiers

Ysselsteyn

1940-1945 - The Germans killed in action in Valkenburg-Houthem.

  • German soldiers who died in the municipality of Valkenburg-Houthem (now: Valkenburg aan de Geul). Among them is also a conscript from Alsace. They are listed here as - German Front Soldiers -
  • Valkenburgers who were drafted into service because they were of German descent. - Valkenburg - German Front Soldiers -
  • Some Dutch volunteers from Valkenburg, who died on the eastern front. - Valkenburg - German Front Soldiers - NSB -
  • A front soldier was also the war criminal Ulrich Matthaeas, who terrorized Roermond and the surrounding area in the last winter of the war. Unlike the people mentioned above, this one survived. - NSDAP - Survivors - German Front Soldiers -

On the right you can see a cross as it stands on the graves of the unknown soldiers at the German military cemetery in Ysselsteyn. Below, these unknown soldiers are listed under the name NN. These are people who are known to have been temporarily buried in Valkenburg, but of whom no identification tags have been preserved. They are also mentioned repeatedly in the documents of the municipal archives of Valkenburg a/d Geul about the German fallen.

The identification tags or dog tags [1] are important for the identification of the wearer in any war. Those of the Wehrmacht also stated to which unit the soldier belonged at the time the tag was issued. In the case of the fallen Germans at the Ysselsteyn cemetery, this information is therefore given whenever possible. We do so here as well:
Service rank
ID ID number with indication of unit
 Probable place of death
Location of the burial place(s)
