NN Bouwmann

 ?      17-09-1944 Valkenburg
- German Front Soldiers -

    Ysselsteyn, NN

    Gemeentearchief Valkenburg:

  • 1945-10-30 Excavations Nieuweweg - In the week from October 15 to 20, 1945, 3 German soldiers were exhumed in Valkenburg. Report by Captain Croes, Identification, Recovery and Investigation Service (Dienst Identificatie, Berging en Opsporing).
  • 1945-10-30 Excavations Nieuweweg, list - Three corpses, only one of which could be identified: Anton Schuhgraf(s).
  • 1945-10-31 Excavations Nieuweweg, table - This table is on of the results of the excavations in the garden of Villa Leeuwenhorst on Nieuweweg in Valkenburg. They were carried out in the week of October 15 to 20, 1945 under the direction of Captain Croes of the Dienst Identificatie, Berging en Opsporing (Identification, Recovery and Investigation Service). Three bodies were exhumed, identified where possible and reburied in the General Cemetery on the Cauberg.
  • 1945-11-24 Questionnaire of the identification service - Questionnaire completed by the municipality. The date of the document is not yet known, so we have chosen a random date.
  • He belonged with Anton Schuhgraf(s) and the unknown of Leeuwenhorst to the group of three men who operated a cannon in the park of Villa Leeuwenhorst, Nieuweweg 52, Valkenburg. This caused casualties among the US forces who began to liberate Valkenburg on September 14. It was discovered and set on fire on September 17, 1944, with the operators surrounding it. The operators of the other cannon fled. [1]
By now the Americans had replenished their supplies and could now continue their advance.
All we know about this soldier is that his name was probably Bouwmann, because Captain A.K. Croes of the Identification, Recovery and Investigation Department wrote about him: the name of this soldier was in a gas mask lying nearby.
The gardener of Villa Leeuwenhorst assumed that he had belonged to the Afrikakorps [2], because of the yellow color of that gas mask.

But a member of the Valkenburg working group We do Remember writes about this in a private email: It is not true that he was from the so-called Afrikakorps, because for each unit it was customary to camouflage the equipment/gas mask canisters etc. with yellow paint. They did the same in Normandy/France.
Since we have no further data on him, we are not even sure, if his name was transcribed correctly.
