Het concentratiekamp Buchenwald, officieel KL Buchenwald, was een van de grootste concentratiekampen op Duits grondgebied. Het was tussen juli 1937 en april 1945 in gebruik op de Ettersberg bij Weimar. In totaal zaten er in deze periode ongeveer 266.000 mensen uit alle Europese landen gevangen. Het dodental wordt geschat op ongeveer 56.000. [1]
Er werden medische experimenten uitgevoerd, bijvoorbeeld door gevangenen te besmetten met ziekten om vaccins te testen. Of oorlogswonden werden hen toegebracht om behandelmethodes uit te proberen.
De meeste satellietkampen werden net als het hoofdkamp ingezet voor een specifieke productie, waarbij de gevangenen massaal werden uitgebuit en soms vermoord. Toch waren het natuurlijk geen werkkampen zoals de open dwangarbeiderskampen, maar concentratiekampen. [2]

Er waren veel verzetsmensen onder de gevangenen. Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat zij zich ook tijdens hun gevangenschap organiseerden. Tegen het einde van de oorlog met groeiend succes. Zij verborgen Joodse kinderen en redden hen zo van het vernietigingskamp, zij saboteerden ook andere deportaties naar vernietigingskampen, zij organiseerden een radiozender waarmee zij contact legden met de naderende Geallieerden. Tijdens een luchtaanval in augustus 1944, konden ze wapens stelen en verbergen. Het was hun echter duidelijk dat zij nog niet in open gevecht konden treden met de SS. Zij konden dan ook niet verhinderen dat 28.000 mensen uit het hoofdkamp en tenminste 10.000 gevangenen uit de subkampen tussen 7 en 10 april 1945 op dodenmarsen en "evacuatietreinen" werden weggestuurd via ongeveer 60 routes. Tussen de 12.000 en 15.000 mensen kwamen daarbij om het leven. Toen op 11 april 1945 de Amerikaanse troepen naderden en een deel van de SS-bewakers moest vechten, arresteerde de verzetsgroep 125 SS-ers en verklaarde het kamp bevrijd.

Een van de ergste nevenkampen van Buchenwald was het concentratiekamp Mittelbau-Dora [3] bij Nordhausen in Thüringen, aan de zuidelijke rand van het Harzgebergte. Na de vernietiging van het legerproefstation Peenemünde, waar tot dan toe de V1- en V2-wapens werden gebouwd, bouwden duizenden dwangarbeiders de grootste ondergrondse wapenfabriek van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Hiervoor werd het bestaande tunnelsysteem in de Kohnstein uitgebreid. In de beginperiode kwamen de gevangenen niet eens buiten in het daglicht. Tegen de tijd dat de productie begon, was al een derde van de gevangenen gestorven van de honger, uitputting en de onbeschrijfelijke hygiënische omstandigheden. [4]
