Kamp „Erika“ bij Ommen

Op de Besthmenerberg bij Ommen had de Nederlandse Theosofische Vereniging voor de oorlog een kamp voor grote bijeenkomsten. Die vereniging werd door de bezetters verboden, het kamp werd in beslag genomen. Men wist in de opbouwfase vanaf juni 1941, dat men het nodig zou gaan hebben, ook al wist men nog niet precies waarvoor. De Duitse paardenslager Werner Schwier had de leiding bij de ombouw. Voertaal was Duits, de naam van het kamp werd „Erika“, vanwege de heidevelden in de omgeving. [1]
Erika is een van de Duitse benamingen voor de dophei. Er was ook een destijds door Duitse soldaten veel gezongen marslied met die naam. [2]

Op 22 juni 1942 werd het kamp geopend met Nederlandse bewakers. In de eerste fase waren de gevangenen veroordeelde zwarthandelaren en illegale slachters, mensen die de distributiewetten hadden overtreden. Daar kwamen later andere door Nederlandse rechters veroordeelden bij, want er was in korte tijd een groot plaatsgebrek in Nederlandse gevangenissen ontstaan. [1]
Tot de zomer van 1943 had Schwier de leiding over het kamp. Het werd steeds meer een centrum van professioneel sadisme. De techniek van kwellen was in dit kamp zo geperfectioneerd dat naar verluidt zelfs experts uit Dachau en Auschwitz kennis kwamen maken met de wijze waarop gevangenen in Kamp Erika werden mishandeld. [3]
Al gauw heerste ook hier plaatsgebrek en er werden gevangenen uitgeleend aan dwangarbeiderskampen in Duitsland, zoals in Keulen, Siegburg en Heerte (Hermann-Goering-Werke), maar zij bleven ingeschreven in Ommen. De geschiedkundige Guusta Veldman schat het aantal doden in deze fase van het kamp tussen de 170 en 200. [4]

Vanaf mei [1] of juni 1943 werd Erika een „opvoedingskamp“ (AEL, Arbeits-Erziehungs-Lager) voor landlopers en bedelaars en voor mensen die zich aan de arbeidsplicht in Duitsland hadden onttrokken. [3]
De eerste gevangenen waren enkele duizend studenten, die geweigerd hadden, de loyaliteitsverklaring te ondertekenen en zich dus voor dwangarbeid in Duitsland moesten melden. Zij werden in Ommen verzameld om van daar naar Duitsland te worden gebracht. Maar de meesten kwamen niet opdagen. Vooral in het begin van die fase werden daarom bewakers uit Ommen erop uit gestuurd door het hele land, om voor meer gevangenen te zorgen. Zij werden ingedeeld als hulppolitie bij de plaatselijke korpsen, ook nu weer onder een Duitse naam: Arbeitskontrolldienst, afgekort AKD. Zij waren ook hier berucht, ze schoten op alles wat bewoog. [5]
Een van de beruchtste leden van de AKD was wel hun chef in Venlo Johan Berendsen, de „schrik van Venlo“, die na de oorlog als oorlogsmisdadiger is terechtgesteld.
Omdat het in deze tijd een doorgangskamp was naar bestemmingen in Duitsland, waar die werkkrachten heelhuids dienden aan te komen,vielen daarbij in Ommen zelf minder doden dan in de eerste fase. Maar bij de mensenjacht door het hele land had het AKD-gespuis ruimschoots compensatie. Toch zijn ook uit deze periode tenminste drie dodelijke slachtoffers bekend. [1]

De geallieerden waren inmiddels tot het zuiden van Nederland doorgedrongen. Het kamp kwam onder het bevel van de Ordnungspolizei. De aanwezige gevangenen van het AEL werden naar Duitsland afgevoerd. Bijvoorbeeld naar Neuengamme, zoals Arie van den Munckhof en Jan Kuypers. Er werden vanaf dat moment gevangenen opgesloten, die in de regio opgepakt waren, daaronder Jaap Musch, de enige in onze database voorkomende persoon, die ook in Ommen is gestorven. De bewakers hadden hun sadisme nog lang niet afgelegd, bleek later uit de lijkschouwing van Jaap. † 07 september 1944 Ommen.

Het NIOD (Nederlands Instituut voor Oorlogsdocumentatie) schat dat zeker meer dan 10% van de gevangenen van Ommen zijn omgekomen (in Ommen of in een van de Duitse werkkampen). Na de oorlog werd het kamp ‘Erica’ genoemd en deed het dienst als bewaringskamp voor gearresteerde Nederlandse collaborateurs. Op 31 december 1946 werd Kamp Erica gesloten. [3]
De enige zichtbare herinnering in Ommen aan dit kamp is een gedenksteen in het bos. [6]
