Op 22 maart 1933, enkele weken nadat Adolf Hitler tot Rijkskanselier was benoemd, werd in Dachau een concentratiekamp voor politieke gevangenen ingericht. Dit kamp diende als model voor alle latere concentratiekampen en als "school voor geweld" voor de SS-ers onder wier bevel het stond. [2]
De organisatie en ruimtelijke structuur diende later als voorbeeld voor de opbouw van nieuwe concentratiekampen. Het naziregime presenteerde het als een voorbeeldkamp en als afschrikking voor politiek andersdenkenden. Dachau was een oefenterrein voor SS-bewakers en SS-leidinggevenden die later onder andere in de vernietigingskampen ingezet werden. Dachau was als zodanig geen vernietigingskamp. Wel werden in Dachau meer politieke gevangenen vermoord dan in welk ander kamp ook. In de twaalf jaar van zijn bestaan werden hier en in de talrijke nevenkampen meer dan 200.000 personen uit heel Europa opgesloten. Zeker 41.500 werden er vermoord. [2] Er hebben 1935 niet-Joodse Nederlandse mannen en 200 niet-Joodse Nederlandse vrouwen gevangengezeten. Hoeveel joodse Nederlanders kortere of langere tijd in Dachau als doorgangskamp hebben doorgebracht is niet precies bekend, wegens transporten en dodenmarsen terug naar Dachau in maart en april 1945. [3]
Tegenwoordig bevindt zich op dit terrein het Dachau Herinneringscentrum, dat jaarlijks door circa 800.000 mensen uit de hele wereld wordt bezocht. [2]
