Book of the Dead Oranjehotel

Het lied der achttien dooden van Jan Campert in de toen noch ondergrondse krant Vrij Nederland van 21 februari 1943. Dit is het beroemdste gedicht over het verzet, geschreven kort na de eerste massaexecutie in Nederland op 13 maart 1941 op de Waalsdorper­vlakte [1]

De nationale kleur van Nederland is oranje. Dat heeft met het koningshuis te maken. Want hun voorouders, de stadhouders, waren sinds Willem de Zwijger tot aan de Franse Revolutie bovendien staatshoofd van het Franse prinsdom Orange. Vanwege Willem III noemen de Unionisten in Ulster zich nog steeds Orangisten.
Tijdens de Duitse bezetting werd oranje de kleur van het “kleine verzet”. Men ging op een terrasje demonstratief oranje limonade drinken en dergelijke. Toen de Duitsers een cellenbarak van de gevangenis in Scheveningen steeds meer gingen gebruiken om er verzetsmensen op te sluiten en te “verhoren” (= folteren), kreeg die al gauw de erenaam Oranjehotel. [2]

Op de muren aan de buitenkant van de gevangenis werd sinds 1941 steeds weer dit anonieme gedichtje opgehangen:
In deze bajes / zit geen gajes / maar Hollands glorie / potverdorie!
De meeste verzetsmensen en gijzelaars die er belandden, werden na enige tijd naar Duitsland gebracht, bijvoorbeeld de slachtoffers van het OD-proces in Maastricht.

Vlak bij ligt in de duinen de Waalsdorpervlakte [4.2.], een voormalig militair oefenterrein. Die werd door de bezetters gebruikt voor ongeveer 250 executies. Het begon met de joodse verzetsstrijder Ernst Cahn [5], en niet lang daarna de boven genoemde 18 doden, die tijdens hun proces allen in het Oranjehotel hadden gezeten.
