Nadat in de herfst 1944 het grootste deel van Zuid-Nederland was bevrijd, kwam de opmars van de geallieerden gedurende de winter tot stilstand. Dat had drie oorzaken:

1. Die snelle opmars had tot gevolg, dat de aanvoerlijnen te lang werden. Na de bevrijding van Antwerpen was die situatie weliswaar verbeterd, maar dat hoge tempo was toch niet vol te houden.
2. Het was tijdens de slag om Arnhem [3] niet gelukt, dit probleem met luchtlandingstroepen op te lossen. Daarbij kwam het tot meningsverschillen tussen de Britse en de USAmerikaanse opperbevelhebbers, Montgomery [4] en Eisenhower [5]
3. In de winter probeerde de Wehrmacht het tij te keren met een tegenoffensief in de Ardennen [6]. Daardoor werden geallieerde troepen gebonden, wat de opmars stuitte. Die opzet slaagde aanvankelijk, maar heeft de nederlaag van Nazi-Duitsland uiteindelijk niet kunnen verhinderen.

In Limburg was het zuiden tot aan de Roer (Duits: Rur, een riviertje dat ontspringt in de Eifel en in Roermond in de Maas uitmondt. Dit is dus niet de Ruhr van het Roergebied) en het gebied ten westen van de Maas vrij (zie kaartje). De strook oostelijk van de Maas, van de Roer tot vlak voor Nijmegen wachtte nog een zware tijd: de annexatie door Duitsland, de terreur van de parachutisten van majoor Matthaeas en tenslotte de gedwongen evacuatie van de hele bevolking naar Noord-Nederland. [1]
Dat gebied ten oosten van de Maas werd pas tussen 23 februari en 10 maart 1945 bevrijd tijdens de Operation Grenade. [7]

De bevrijding bracht in Zuid-Nederland en later in het hele land om te beginnen een minder mooi verschijnsel met zich mee: allerlei wraakacties tegen echte of vermeende aanhangers van het nazi-bewind. Vrouwen die een relatie met een Duitse man hadden, werden kaalgeschoren, kinderen van NSB-ers werden op school gepest. Dat soort dingen. In Valkenburg is daarbij zelfs een dodelijk slachtoffer gevallen. [8]
De leider van de KP Zuid-Limburg, Bep van Kooten [9] reisde op 17 of 18 september 1944 naar Brussel en werd door de voorlopige opperbevelhebber van het nieuwe Nederlandse leger, Prins Bernhard, tot commandant van de Limburgse Stoottroepen benoemd.
Er werd in de bevrijde gebieden aan de mensen die tot het verzet hadden behoord, de mogelijkheid geboden in dienst van het Nederlandse leger te treden. Daartoe waren de BS (Binnenlandse Strijdkrachten) [10] opgericht. De voormalige leden van het gewapend verzet werden bij de Stoottroepen [11] ingedeeld. Volgens de LO-leider van Kerkrade konden ook LO-leden dienst nemen in de Stoottroepen. [12] Zij kregen delen van het bevroren front voor hun rekening (de grijze gebieden op het kaartje). Toen het front weer in beweging kwam, trokken zij als deel van de geallieerde troepen mee naar Duitsland om het van het fascisme te bevrijden.
Tot 1946 zou het bestuur in de bevrijde gebieden uitgeoefend worden door het „Militair Gezag“, dat voor de provincie Limburg in Maastricht zetelde. Lees meer hierover in Zuid-Limburg is vrij [12]
Degenen die niet tot het gewapend verzet hadden behoord maar wel als OD-leden zich hadden voorbereid om na de aftocht van de Duitsers het machtsvacuüm te vullen, werden bij de bewakingstroepen ingedeeld op plaatsen, waar geen contact meer met de vijand was te verwachten. Soms ging dat anders, zoals in het geval van Josef Saive.

Na de oorlog verklaarde Indonesië zich onafhankelijk. De Nederlandse regering, die dat niet wilde accepteren, stuurde er het leger op af, waaronder de Stoottroepen. Men beweerde, dat de Republiek Indonesië een product van de Japanners was en dat het hier dus ging om een voortzetting van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Hoeveel Stoters, zoals de leden van de Stoottroepen worden genoemd, hebben gemerkt dat zij voor de gek werden gehouden en dat zij deze keer aan de kant van de bezetter stonden?
