Nadat tijdens de kerstdagen van 1944 vrijwel de hele mannelijke bevolking van Roermond was afgevoerd naar Duitsland, was het leed nog niet ten einde. In Januari 1945 kreeg op de hele bevolking op het nog bezette deel van de rechteroever van de Maas bevel, hun huizen te verlaten om zich te laten evacueren. Het ging om de strook Nederlands gebied tussen de monding van de Roer tot vlak voor Nijmegen, die nog in Duitse handen was. Men mocht 30 kg per persoon meenemen. Er werd niet bij gezegd, waarheen de evacuatie zou gaan en werd beloofd, dat de mannen niet voor dwangarbeid zouden weggevoerd, om de opkomst te verhogen. De bedoeling was nog steeds vooral, om bij de op handen zijnde opmars van de geallieerden geen vijandig gezinde burgerbevolking achter zich te hebben en niet de bescherming van de bevolking tegen oorlogsgeweld. Dat blijkt uit de zware straffen, waarmee werd gedreigd. Het ging in totaal om ongeveer 70.000 mensen.
Na voettochten naar Duitse stations moesten zij in vee- en goederenwagons stappen en reden zo dagenlang onder miserabele omstandigheden door Duitsland. Soms werden de treinen door geallieerde vliegtuigen beschoten, omdat de piloten niet wisten, om wat voor treinen het ging. Uiteindelijk merkten zij tot hun opluchting, dat ze weer in Nederland waren.
Mensen uit Venlo en omgeving komen vooral in Groningen terecht, mensen uit Roermond en omstreken vooral in Friesland. Bij aankomst worden ze opgevangen, krijgen ze warm eten en worden ze ontluisd met DDT. De ontvangst is sober, maar wel goed geregeld. Gezinnen uit Groningen, Friesland en Drenthe zullen de Limburgse evacués opvangen.
… Eind maart is Limburg bevrijd, maar heel Nederland nog niet. Ze willen naar huis, maar veel bruggen zijn kapot, waardoor reizen moeilijk of onmogelijk is. Ze kunnen pas in juni of juli terug. Bij thuiskomst in Limburg blijken veel gebouwen te zijn vernietigd.
… De meeste evacués zijn langer dan 3 maanden van huis. De reis en het verblijf in het Noorden levert levenslange vriendschappen op. Er zijn evacués en leden van gastgezinnen die nog elk jaar bij elkaar op bezoek komen. Anderen schrijven en bellen elkaar nog regelmatig. [1]
Er zijn verschillende monumenten opgericht om aan deze evacuatie te herinneren. We noemen hier het monument Evacuatie van Venlo, Van Harenstraat 47, Sint Annaparochie. [2]
Op de katholieke begraafplaats in Heerenveen liggen de 18 Limburgse baby’s en peuters in de leeftijd van vier weken tot drie jaar, die tijdens de evacuatie in Friesland zijn overleden, in een gezamenlijk graf. Zij werden voornamelijk slachtoffer van de ontberingen tijdens de treinreis. Aanvankelijk was dat graf anoniem, zonder grafsteen. Die is er gekomen op 3 mei 2012, met de namen van de kinderen en het laatste vers van het gedicht (in het Fries, De poppen fan Limboarch, ofwel De kindjes van Limburg) van kinderarts en schilder Bonne Dijkstra, de man die de kinderen heeft laten begraven in Heerenveen. [3]
