– De bevrijding van 80 gevangenen.
Herhaaldelijk werden plannen beraamd om de onder Nederlandse leiding staande Maastrichtse gevangenis te overvallen. Daarbij ging het niet in eerste instantie om de leefomstandigheden, die er in de loop van 1943 steeds beroerder werden. Maar door de hulp bij de verbetering van die leefomstandigheden ontstonden zeer bruikbare contacten, die bij de bevrijding van gevangenen gebruikt konden worden. Zowel de kwaliteit als de kwantiteit van het voedsel namen af en de cellen raakten overvol. Vooral op de zolders heerste ’s zomers een ondraaglijke hitte. L.O. en knokploegen stelden eendrachtig alles in het werk om iets aan het voedseltekort te doen. In de nacht van 15 juni 1944 stal de Heerlense knokploeg duizend kilo boter uit de zuivelfabriek „Limburgia“ in Reymerstok. Een deel was bestemd voor de gevangenis in Maastricht. Om voedsel en dergelijke naar binnen te smokkelen was hulp nodig van het personeel. Al vroeg in de oorlog, in 1941, kreeg de Maastrichtse illegaliteit medewerking van met verschillende leden van het personeel, waaronder de gevangenisklerk M.J.H. Rademakers en ziekenverzorger Hubert Jamin. Berichten en zelfs complete verslagen van verhoren werden naar buiten gesmokkeld. Dreigende arrestaties konden aldus voorkomen worden. In 1944 ontwikkelde zich hieruit een inlichtingendienst met landelijke vertakkingen.
De konktete plannen voor een bevrijdingsactie begonnen eind 1943 toen een aantal illegale werkers uit alle delen van de provincie door de infiltratie van H. Vastenhout c.s. waren opgepakt (Het Englandspiel). Eén dag voordat de actie zou plaatsvinden werden de arrestanten echter overgebracht naar Amersfoort.
Begin 1944 werden nieuwe plannen gesmeed vanwege arrestatiegolven in Venlo en Maastricht. Na een door gebrek aan coördinatie mislukte aanloop (gelukkig maar, want dat was een valstrik) liep het mis op 8 april 1944, omdat daags tevoren de gevangenen waren overgebracht naar Amersfoort. Daaronder Frans Coehorst, districts­koerier en secretaris van „Ambrosius“, die dus veel over het verzet wist.
Men liet zich door deze tegenslagen niet uit het veld slaan. In juni 1944 werd voor het eerst gepoogd de gedetineerden met hulp van bewakers en de directeur te bevrijden. Dat mislukte vooralsnog, omdat directeur Dilling het niet aandurfde. Op maandagavond 4 september gingen de leider van de knokploeg Zuid-Limburg, P.F. Driessen, en de inspecteur van politie M. Krol, naar Dilling om de vrijlating van alle nog aanwezige politieke gevangenen te eisen. Dilling zei dat de belangrijkste politieke gevangenen inmiddels waren weggevoerd, maar hij zou die ochtend om 5 uur naar de gevangenis komen. De knokploeg Zuid-Limburg en enkele Maastrichtse L.O.-ers zouden ook aanwezig zijn.
Het was toevallig Dolle Dinsdag, zodat geen tegenstand kwam van de kant van aanwezige nationaalsocialisten. Een groep van circa twaalf personen bevrijdde tachtig gevangenen. Ongeveer de helft kende de stad en zocht zijn eigen weg. Circa tien personen werden overgebracht naar een particuliere woning. Rond de resterende dertig ontstonden onvoorziene problemen. Zij werden ondergebracht in een schoolgebouw waar daklozen verbleven. Laatstgenoemden waren bang voor ontdekking en represailles van Duitse zijde en eisten het vertrek van de bevrijde gevangenen. Daarop vertrok men naar een patronaatsgebouw in de buurt vanwaar ze over een aantal onderduikadressen werden verdeeld. [1]
