1940-1945 Concentration Camps

Concentration Camps | The Economy of the Concentration Camps | Dachau | Sachsenhausen | Buchenwald | Mauthausen | Ravensbrück | Neuengamme | Auschwitz /Oświęcim | POW camp Arnoldsweiler | Oranje-Hotel | The song of the eighteen dead | Salzgitter | Bergen-Belsen | AEL (Arbeits-Erziehungs-Lager) | Natzweiler | Camp Amersfoort | Camp “Erika” near Ommen | Camp Vught (Camp Herzogenbusch) |

Neuengamme was a whole system of camps under the control of the SS, which made a lot of money from it. The main camp was located near Hamburg [1][2]. One of the subcamps was the Kommando Neustadt in the Lübeck Bay near Neustadt.

During the week of April 18-26, 1945, 5000 prisoners and SS guards from Neuengamme were taken from there aboard the Cap Arcona on the ship Athen on the orders of SS commander Himmler. The same was done with the ship Thielbek (2800 prisoners from Neuengamme) and the ship Deutschland IV. What the SS’s intentions were in doing so has never been clarified with certainty.
The ships were bombed by the Allies in the last days of the war, on May 3, 1945 [3]. They assumed that these were troop ships, and perhaps that was exactly the purpose behind it. After all, the ships in fact had nowhere to go. In this way, the SS probably hoped to get rid of these troublesome prisoners in an easy way. After all, many shipwrecked prisoners were slaughtered while still in the water [3].In fact, the Swedish government had warned the British government that prisoners were being put on the ships. British reconnaissance planes must also have noticed the mass transports of prisoners. The British government is keeping archives of the bombing of the three ships under lock and key until 2045. This can be taken as an indication that there is something very serious to hide. [3.2] Was it poor communication or perhaps anti-Semitism at the top of the R.A.F. who thought that Jewish prisoners were involved? We will see.

The largest subcamp to Neuengamme was in Salzgitter. There, so many resistance fighters, prisoners of war and others were forced to work in heavy industry that you will find an additional section for Salzgitter below. Other subcamps were Ladelund [4] and Sandbostel [5].

Regional Historic Center Limburg Pagina is in het Nederlands Page available in English
Limburg has numerous specialized archive institutions that preserve relevant historical sources concerning World War II. However, it is not always clear to the public for which information they can go where. Archives have overlapping work areas, organizations and people have been active in the past in different areas and in different fields. So it often takes a long time to find the right place to find information.
Here you can search, but also share your documents with other interested parties. This can be done by donating them to existing archives or museums, or by making digital copies of the available documents or images.61
